COMING OF AGE TRADITIONS

In northeastern Minnesota, there is a small reservation known as Nett Lake. Nett Lake is inhabited by the Bois Forte Band. The Bois Forte Band and other populations of Ojibwe practice coming of age traditions unique to their culture. These traditions represent the exit from one stage of life and the entrance to another for members of the bands. This project briefs the reader on Ojibwe culture and history and delves into the Coming of Age traditions practiced by the Ojibwe, with an emphasis on the tradition of creating a handmade gift in exchange for receiving one’s Ojibwe name.
